South Dakota Cast Iron Skillet

Each iron skillet is hand cast, made to order, and created specifically for you!

There is one master pattern made for each state, which are part of a larger series of contiguous US shaped skillets that all fit together to form an image of the United States map.

The concept was originally an art piece that envisioned a large scale map of American states as cast iron skillets. Each pattern to make the state skillets were originally hand-cut using birch plywood for the profile of the pan, and sculpted local cherry wood for the handles that either dive or duck under the neighboring states around them.

Every sand mold made from these patterns is incredibly unique, as I make them one by one. The skillet pattern receives a numerical identifier on the backside each time I make the molds, to mark which one of the 50 limited edition castings it will become in that specific state’s limited series. Each state then has this number cast into its backside, and is shipping out with a  “birth certificate” that officially documents the series number in the limited edition.
